It’s been three years since JNF WA began its partnership with Merchav Am. From a dusty desert yishuv with no green spaces, to the signature JNF WA Playground and landscaping and garden areas for the Community and Early Learning Centres, the first phase of our long-term partnership is fully funded and almost complete.
This community, deep in the Negev, comprises 50 families with some 150 children. As its name indicates, (Merchav, wide open spaces), the community is distinguished by its relative isolation from towns or cities.
WHAT ARE FUNDS BEING RAISED FOR?
In order for a Negev community to grow and become sustainable, a key ingredient is attracting new families. The funds raised from JNF WA’s 2017 Pesach Blue Box campaign will go towards the Merchav Am Entranceway Smart Fencing Project.
The combination of a green and welcoming front entrance and a smart fencing security system are key elements to creating a positive first impression for prospective new families, as well as giving existing residents a sense of pride and security. The smart fencing comprises a series of security cameras located at the new-look entranceway and also placed in key locations around the community.
WHY IS THIS PROJECT IMPORTANT?
- Provides a green and welcoming entrance.
- Offers residents a sense of pride and security.
- Improves the community’s environment, adding vital greenery in a desert landscape.
- Contributes to the quality of life of the community’s residents in general.
- Serves to attract young families to make their homes in Merchav Am.
Merchav Am, founded in 2001, is a community comprised of some 50 idealistic families with more than 150 children. To date, 90 children attend the day care centre and kindergarten; 40 are 2 years old and under and 50 are between 3-5 years of age.
WHERE IS THE PROJECT LOCATED?
Merchav Am is between Sde Boker and Yerhoham, in the heart of the Negev.
