A new ecological visitor centre is almost complete thanks to YOUR support
Last year, as part of our 2014 Campaign you generously supported Kibbutz Zikim, which was established in 1949. As you will remember there are 70 families in Kibbutz Zikim living adjacent to the border with Northern Gaza, just south of Ashkelon. When you are there you feel as if you can reach out and touch Gaza and the sea.
For the last 14 years community members have lived under constant attack from Gaza and have been hit by dozens of missiles.
The kibbutz has shown remarkable resilience in coping with these challenges.
During last year’s Operation Protective Edge campaign in Gaza, terrorists landed on Zikim’s beach but were thwarted by the IDF, only metres away from Zikim’s homes. In addition, a tunnel was dug under their fields by Hamas to carry out terrorist attacks.
This community works tirelessly to strengthen Israel’s south.
Your donation has helped Zikim to shore up its fragile economy with a sustainable source of income from eco-tourism. You are helping to create an Ecological Centre that will draw visitors to the area, to the benefit not only of Zikim but the 21 other communities nearby – all like Zikim, defending Israel’s southern frontier.
The eco centre is now approximately 50% complete and is on track to be completed in 2016 as we promised. The heritage building is being restored to its previous glory as an Ottoman era Governor’s residence, which will serve as the Visitor Centre, the Lookout Station and the Ecological Facility all overlooking the Shikma River basin.
Your support of the Zikim project is part of JNF Major Donor’s commitment to realising Ben Gurion’s dream of strengthening the Negev and our longstanding support of Israel’s South.
Thank you for making a difference.
