Guest Speaker Ofir Fisher was born in South Africa and moved to Israel at the age of three. He is the co-founder and Vice President if the Or Movement.
Following the completion of his military service, Ofir and lifelong friend Ronnie Flammer, established the community of Sansana in 1999, the first community to be established in the Negev in over 15 years. Due to it’s great success they co-founded the Or Movement in 2002.
The seed of the Or Movement was to provide young people in Israel an alternative to moving to Tel-Aviv, while focusing development and economic growth on locations that were “not in dispute.”
“We wanted to channel the energy of young people to the 70% of today’s Israel made up of the Negev and the Galilee; right now, the Negev makes up 60% of Israel, but with only 8% of our population,” Fisher said. “This land is the future of Israel”
The Or Movement together with the Jewish National Fund have established many new communities in Southern Israel which have brought life back to the Negev. more than 2,500 families have since moved to Or Movement towns, and their success has brought the group tremendous notoriety in Israel.
In 2010, Or movement won the first ever Prime minister’s Award for Innovation and Initiatives, followed by the Yigal Alon Award for Exemplary Pioneering Activities and was then named the in The Algemeiner’s Jewish 100, a list of the top 100 individuals who positively influenced Jewish life in 2012.
